Sex and the City

When we viewed the first 2 episodes of Sex and the City, I was a little apprehensive about the reasoning for studying the episodes. I have probably watch about a total of four episodes in my life, only because of past girlfriends being interested in the series. As we began to watch the episodes, I began to be fond of the life lessons and very interesting topics of sex tips and dating tips that each episode included. I also was able to see how active male and passive female along with scopophilia was demonstrated throughout the characters in the show.

In class, we learned that active/passive division of labor can be summed up as a world ordered by sexual imbalance. Active and passive division involves the pleasure in looking that has been split between active/male and passive/female. Another example of active/passive division can be from a form of gaze. Gaze can be noticed in Sex and the City when a certain male or female looks or "gazes," at another male or female. An example of this was when the characters Mr. Big and Carrie first met. They made several different looks back and forth at each other as they both walked away from each other. They used a full body check out from head to toe on each other.

Sex and The City also demonstrated another lesson that we learned in class. Scopophilia can be defined as an arise from pleasure in using another person as an object of sexual stimulation through sight. Scopophilia is the pleasure of looking at another person as a sexual object. An example can be when Samantha met Carries friend and wanted to sleep with him because of the fact that he had sex with models and filmed every act. This could be an example of scopophilia for both characters because they both received pleasures from viewing the opposite sex whether it be on film or from sexual contact.
